Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, will never again be part of Ukraine, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said on Monday in remarks detailing his objection to Zagreb providing military aid to Kyiv. In December, Croatian lawmakers rejected a proposal that the country join a European Union mission in support of the Ukrainian military, reflecting deep divisions between Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. A vocal critic of Western policy in Ukraine, Milanovic has said he does not want his country, the EU's newest member state, to face what he has called potentially disastrous consequences over the 11-month-old war in Ukraine.

In trying to block the release of a special grand jury's report, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis argued in court last week that decisions in the case were “imminent” and that the report's publication could jeopardize the rights of “future defendants. Though Willis, a Democrat, didn't mention Trump by name, her comments marked the first time a prosecutor in any of several current investigations tied to the Republican former president has hinted that charges could be forthcoming. The remarks ratcheted anticipation that an investigation focused, in part, on Trump's call with Georgia's secretary of state could conclude before ongoing federal probes.

Turkey warned its citizens on Saturday against "possible Islamophobic, xenophobic and racist attacks" in the United States and Europe after its Western allies cautioned their citizens in Turkey about possible terror attacks. In two separate travel advisories, the Turkish foreign ministry recommended its citizens in the United States and European countries "act calmly in the face of possible xenophobic and racist harassment and attacks" and to "stay away from areas where demonstrations may intensify." Running his family's ranch in Apure state, Reyes Hernández González found that the cattle business in the Venezuelan lowlands of the 21st century can be just as wild as during previous centuries, with rustlers and criminal gangs being replaced by the better organized and more aggressive leftist guerrillas, who threaten, kidnap and kill to get cattlemen to pay extortion money. The official made a $13 million offer in a friendly manner and Hernández politely turned it down, never guessing that his refusal would lead to years of imprisonment at the feared headquarters of the nation's Military Intelligence Police, where he was hung by the wrists and subjected to electric shocks by agents wanting him to sign the papers giving up his family's ranch. Hernández, 43, remained jailed under trumped-up charges for more than four years before he was able to escape.
