A prominent group of current and former Republicans working to unseat Donald Trump in the November elections have targeted Mitch McConnell and other allies of the president in a scathing new ad. The Lincoln Project released a video on Twitter that rounded up comments previously made by the Senate majority leader and other conservatives on Capitol Hill speaking out against filling a vacancy on the Supreme Court during an election year. That was because Republicans had refused to hold a confirmation process for Merrick Garland, a judge nominated by former President Barack Obama in 2016.
Changing gender will not be made easier, Liz Truss has announced, but the price of a certificate to legally swap sex will be cut to £5. The Minister for Women and Equalities confirmed speculation that the Government will not allow transgender people to self-identity as the opposite sex, stating that gender recognition reform “is not the top priority for transgender people”. Instead, they will still be required to live in their acquired gender for two years in order to be granted a gender recognition certificate (GRC), which legally confirms their transition.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson may have reached a new low Monday night, calling the statement that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dictated just before her death “pathetic,” adding that he chose not to “believe for a second” that she said it. Following the death of the iconic liberal judge, NPR reported that Ginsburg had her granddaughter Clara Spera take down a note in her final days: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.” Amid the rush by Senate Republicans and President Donald Trump to ignore Ginsburg's request and nominate and confirm a new justice before the Nov. 3 election, the president floated a conspiracy theory that Washington Democrats were actually behind RBG's dying wish.
A former Kurdish parliamentarian jailed in Turkey on terrorism charges has been handed an additional prison term for insulting President Tayyip Erdogan, two of her lawyers said. Sebahat Tuncel was sentenced last week to 11 months and 20 days for calling Erdogan an enemy of Kurds and women in a speech in 2016, comments one of her lawyers defended as legitimate criticism of a political opponent. Tuncel had served in Turkey's parliament for the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP).
As Canada's parliament returns and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau seeks to put an ethics scandal behind him, his government will this week unveil its plans for the country's pandemic response and recovery. The last time Mr Trudeau's government held a Throne Speech - where a government outlines its policies and programmes as a parliamentary session begins - was less than a year ago. In August, he made a controversial decision to prorogue - or suspend - parliament and return on 23 September with a new Throne Speech to address the realities of the pandemic.

I have made no secret of my view that the greatest failing of Donald Trump's presidency has been his handling of Supreme Court vacancies. His first term in office, which has coincided with his party's control of the Senate, was the culmination of decades of work by social conservatives and legal activists to remake the federal judiciary. I have never seen this coalition more united than it was in 2018 behind the much-vaunted possibility of nominating Amy Coney Barrett, the distinguished Notre Dame law professor and U.S. Appeals Court judge.

The world's health care can thank the horseshoe crab' Since the late 1970s, horseshoe crab blood has been approved to make what's called the Limulus amebocyte lysate test, or the LAL test — an alarm system triggered by a type of bacteria that can cause fever, and in some cases, death. Simply put, it works like this: A mixture of lysate is first made from the horseshoe crab's amebocyte or blood cells. Next, that fluid is added to whatever material a researcher is testing for safety.

Visiting a major air force base on Penghu in the sensitive Taiwan Strait that divides the two sides, Tsai told pilots and engineers she was aware of their "heroic performance" when intercepting and driving away Chinese aircraft.

The supernova's blast wave continues to scream through space, heating and compressing dust and gas in a way that causes them to glow in a web of colorful ribbons called the Cygnus Loop. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope recently captured an image of the Cygnus Loop in unprecedented detail.

“These tests create unnecessary stress for young people already dealing with mental health challenges.”
“Dropping the SAT requirement makes it harder for colleges to compare applicants against a common standard.”
“The best predictor of college success overall is a simple one: high school grades.”
“What matters more is a broader push to help minority students get better educations.”
