Full repair of 30-inch broken water main in Northville expected by middle of next week

A 30-inch water transmission main in Northville is not expected to be back in service until the middle of next week after a break was found early Friday morning, according to Great Lakes Water Authority.

The break was discovered at approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday morning, sinking parts of Baseline Road between Novi Street and Oakland Avenue, flooding the surrounding area.

“I would guess between seven and eight houses were damaged by water,” Northville City Manager George Lahanas told Hometown Life, noting some homes may have flooded up through the basement and into the first floor.

Power was turned off in the area, Lahanas said on Friday, but the local water supply was safe with no boil-water advisory issued.

“At this point, the city’s water is in good shape we have enough pressure and enough water flow,” he said to Hometown Life. “From a water perspective, we are doing OK in the city and don’t expect to have a problem.”

By 9 a.m. on Friday, the agency was able to isolate the break by closing two valves on the transmission main.

By Friday evening, the Great Lakes Water Authority Field Service crews had removed most of the water from the break site using large pumps, allowing them to see the damaged pipe.

By late Monday morning, crews and their contractors removed 16 feet of damaged pipe and began work to replace it with a new segment.

Crews plan to have the pipe repaired and begin pressure testing by the end of the week. The pipe will still need to be disinfected and water quality tested following the replacement in order to put the transmission main back into service.

The water transmission main is expected to be repaired and back in service by the middle of next week.
