Panama City Beach working to create space for more amenities at Frank Brown Park

PANAMA CITY BEACH − Local officials hope to create more space for additional amenities at a popular park on the Beach.

According to Cheryl Joyner, director of parks and recreation for Panama City Beach, a connector road that spans through Frank Brown Park is being reconfigured to remove a curve, allowing for more space on the south side of the park.

The road connects Mandy Lane with Pier Park Drive.

"This allows for the improvements, placement (and) expansion of other amenities at the park by creating a more efficient use of our space," Joyner wrote in an email. "Frank Brown Park is the largest park in the city and is multi-use, providing fields and courts for various sports, a year-round aquatic center, walking trails, a festival site, dog parks, indoor recreation opportunities and more.

"On so many levels, Frank Brown Park is a breath of fresh air, and its value to the community goes beyond green spaces and playgrounds."

Joyner noted the project is part of the Frank Brown Park master plan, which was presented to the Panama City Beach City Council during a meeting in May 2023.

City officials voted to pay $117,000 to Gortemoller Engineering to design the project and $1.269 million to American Sand and Asphalt Paving to oversee construction.

A post on the city's Facebook page states that during the road's reconfiguration, it will be closed to traffic on weekdays until May 1.

"The construction will be a bit of an inconvenience to our users, but most road construction is," Joyner wrote. "The closure is temporary and won't greatly impact weekend special events and tournaments ... which primarily take place on Saturdays and or Sundays.

"Mandy Lane remains open, and that is the main entrance into the park."
