PHOTOS: The provocative new book 'Independent Mysteries' explores the sense of 'intimate distance'

In July 2017, Mike Magers was archiving images he’d shot over the previous decade, when he began to notice emotional themes in the outtakes, which persisted regardless of geography or time. Drawing this connection was the first step in developing “Independent Mysteries” into a broader series and now a new book.

For many years, in his travels and in his immersion in long-term photo-documentary projects, he wrestled with a simultaneous sense of connection and disconnection. People shared parts of their lives with him, often intimate, but also only for brief moments. He began to think about these encounters with the term “intimate distance,” because part of him craved something more than just fleeting intimacy. It became apparent to him that his unconscious mind was imposing its will on his artistic expression; clearly, he was seeing similar things across vast geographical and temporal spaces because he was feeling those things, whether or not he was aware of it.

The title of the book refers to how these images function as stories within themselves (he likens them to film stills). His interpretation of them rests on his own experiences, he hopes as well that they are intriguing enough to provoke the creation of a narrative. At heart, he has always loved photography that poses more questions than answers, and it was his aim for this book to deliver on that promise. (James Price)
