Popular steakhouse will close one of its Illinois locations after almost 40 years

Alexander's Steakhouse is set to close its Springfield location after a final day on Feb. 29. Mercedes Restaurants, Inc. President Ron Helms announced the coming shutdown in a Feb. 16 Facebook post.

Helms attributed the closure to rising costs across the board, as well as an increase in competition. He said the business worked to adapt but was ultimately unable to "turn things around."

"As shocking as it is to everyone, it is a decision that had to be made," Helms wrote.

The Facebook announcement garnered over 1,100 shares and more than 280 comments as of noon − with many in the community expressing sadness at the news.

Helms thanked the Springfield community for their support over the years, and thanked employees for their "hard work and dedication."

"You have all been great to work with, and I am truly saddened to have to say goodbye," he wrote.

The closure of the Springfield restaurant will leave Alexander's Steakhouse with two locations − one in Peoria and one in Normal.

Alexander's Steakhouse opened its first location just over 40 years ago in Peoria. The restaurant earned the titles of Best Salad Bar, Best Steakhouse and Best Fine Dining establishment in the 2023 Official Community’s Choice Awards.
