Sioux Falls crash near Marion Road sends 1 to hospital

Officials with the Sioux Falls Police Department responded to a two-vehicle crash early Thursday morning at the intersection of Marion Road and Madison Street.

Department spokesperson Sam Clemens said they received a call about the accident at 6:11 a.m. Thursday. Officers said the accident involved a 2010 Hyundai TCN, which was going south on Marion Road, and a 1999 Ford F150, which was going east on Madison Street.

The Hyundai ran a red light and struck the Ford. The driver of the Hyundai, a 21-year-old man from Sioux Falls, was ejected from the vehicle, Clemens said. The driver of the Ford was a 58-year-old man also from Sioux Falls.

The Hyundai driver was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, with the main one a possible broken leg. Details on rest of his injuries have not yet been disclosed, Clemens said.

The Ford driver suffered minor injuries but refused treatment from paramedics on scene and said he would seek it on his own.

Sioux Falls police closed the intersection of West Madison Street and North Marion Road for about an hour and a half, with northbound traffic from North Marion toward the intersection diverted from 7:03 a.m. to 8:24 a.m., according to post on X, formerly Twitter, by the department.

The Hyundai driver was cited for DWI, reckless driving, a red light violation, no driver’s license and a seatbelt violation, Clemens said. He said the driver was given tickets since he was in the hospital and is expected to make a court appearance at some point for the charges.

Even though Sioux Falls recently saw nearly a foot of snow between Monday and Wednesday, Clemens said road and weather conditions or high speed weren’t believed to be factors in this crash.

“It was just the fact that he ran a red light and (didn't) stop when you’re supposed to,” Clemens said. “And alcohol was a pretty big factor in this accident.”

This is an ongoing investigation.
