Sleepless in Seattle... in Baltimore? Eight great romantic comedies filmed in Maryland

Single? Dating? Married? Whatever your relationship status may be, here's a great selection of romantic movies curated just for you.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993, PG)

The beloved, timeless film Sleepless in Seattle, released in 1993, was filmed in multiple locations across the United States. Yet, one particular location stands out to most Marylanders: The big, bustling city of Baltimore.

Sleepless in Seattle, directed by Nora Ephron, follows a recently widowed man — played by actor Tom Hanks — who moves to Seattle with his son. One night, Sam's story is overheard on the radio by Baltimore reporter Annie Reed, played by actress Meg Ryan. Annie, who's engaged, falls for Sam and writes him a letter asking him to meet her at the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day.

A few on-screen sites that fans of the classic film can visit include Annie's home, The Baltimore Sun building, the Washington Monument in Mount Vernon, Broadway Pier, Hollywood Diner, George Peabody Library and more.

Runaway Bride (1999, PG)

The classic 1999 romantic-comedy film Runaway Bride, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, was filmed in none other than Berlin, Maryland. That's right — in 1998, the small town of Berlin became the fictional town of Hale, Maryland, where the film's main female character resides.

Runaway Bride, directed by Garry Marshall, follows reporter Ike Graham, who is assigned to write a story about a woman who has left a string of fiancés at the altar. Ike nicknames the woman, Maggie Carpenter, the "Runaway Bride." Ike and Maggie later come face-to-face in the town of Hale, where he goes to cover her fourth trip down the aisle. There, love blooms unexpectedly.

Next to award-winning actress Julia Roberts and actor Richard Gere, Berlin's Main Street was a sure star of the film. Main Street became a “hot” set as filming was done using many of the downtown shops, not to mention hundreds of locals as extras, according to the Town of Berlin.

Tuck Everlasting (2002, PG)

Believer it or not, Berlin, Maryland, was the host to not one, but two beloved romance films. The timeless and enchanting adventure Tuck Everlasting, released in 2002, is yet another romance film shot on location in the small, Eastern Shore town.

Tuck Everlasting, directed by Jay Russell, follows the story of teenager Winnie Foster — played by actress Alexis Bledel — who longs for a life of her own. Then, one fateful day, she meets Jesse Tuck — played by actor Jonathan Jackson — a young man who is a part of a family of immortals. Throughout the film, Winnie must decide whether to return to her life or stay with the Tucks.

In 2001, Berlin was transformed into “Treegap," the fictional setting for Tuck Everlasting. Downtown Berlin was transported back to the turn of the century, complete with dirt roads, horses and carriages, and period costumes, according to the Town of Berlin.

Wedding Crashers (2005, R)

Wedding Crashers, the widely-known 2005 romantic-comedy film with an emphasis on the comedy, was also filmed in — you guessed it — Maryland. The breathtaking backdrop of Maryland's Eastern Shore provides an ideal setting for this classic film with vibrant storytelling.

Wedding Crashers, directed by David Dobkin, is centered around characters John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey — played by actors Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn — a pair of womanizers who sneak into romantic wedding receptions to meet women. Soon, the men find themselves at odds with one another when John falls for bridesmaid Claire Cleary — played by actress Rachel McAdams.

The Inn at Perry Cabin, located in the historic town of St. Michaels, Maryland, was just one of the many Maryland-based filming locations for Wedding Crashers. The film also features scenes shot near Annapolis, as well as Assateague Island National Seashore and Washington D.C.

Failure to Launch (2006, PG-13)

The 2006 cozy romantic-comedy film Failure to Launch, features memorable scenes shot in Talbot County's very own Oxford and St. Michaels, as well as Baltimore, Maryland.

Failure to Launch, directed by Tom Dey and starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker, follows Tripp, a 35-year-old bachelor still living at home with his parents. When Tripp's parents have finally had enough of his antics, they hire Paula, whose job is to lure him out of the family home.

Maryland was used for the filming of various scenes such as when Tripp and Paula decide to go to the beach and have a couple of dates in the nearby region, according to Viebly.

Step Up (2006, PG-13)

The beloved romantic-dance film Step Up, released in 2006 and directed by Anne Fletcher, was filmed in multiple locations throughout the big city of Baltimore, Maryland.

Step Up follows foster kid and troublemaker Tyler Gage, played by actor Channing Tatum. When Tyler is sentenced to 200 hours of community service cleaning at the Maryland School of the Arts, he catches the attention of Nora Clark, a ballet student played by actress Jenna Dewan. Tyler, who has some hidden hip-hop dance skills, is recruited by Nora to help her with her dance routines.

The film's fictional "Maryland School of the Arts" is the real-life Booker T. Washington Middle School. Other featured locations include the City Pier Building, Cup Love and more.

Step Up 2: The Streets (2008, PG-13)

The popular 2006 film Step Up later paved the way for a successful romantic-dance anthology film franchise. The second film, Step Up 2: The Streets, was released in 2008.

Step Up 2: The Streets follows yet another group of dancers at the Maryland School of the Arts. When street dancer Andie — played by actress Briana Evigan — enrolls at the school, she joins forces with another dancer, Chase, played by actor Robert Hoffman. Together, the two form a team to compete in an underground dance contest known as "The Streets" and get close along the way.

Much of the romantic-dance film was shot in and around the Hampden area, as well as Baltimore's Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) campus.

He's Just Not That Into You (2009, PG-13)

The 2009 romantic-comedy film He's Just Not That Into You features both a stellar cast made up of Drew Barrymore, Bradley Cooper, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Justin Long and Ginnfer Goodwin, and a Baltimore-centric setting.

He's Just Not That Into You follows a group of friends and lovers struggling to navigate their way through the complexities of modern relationships. Altogether, the interconnecting story arcs provide a special insight into human behavior and love.

The film, directed by Ken Kwapis and based on the self-help book titled He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys, features various locations in and around the Baltimore area including the historic Washington Monument.
