Snow day in Delaware. Closings, cancellations and delays begin to roll in for Tuesday

After a few inches of snow fell in Delaware Monday night, the National Weather Service is calling for snow to turn into sleet and rain early Tuesday across the region.

With slippery conditions expected for the Tuesday morning commute, here are some early delays and cancelations in Delaware announced Monday night.

Schools

Appoquinimink School District - Two-hour delay Tuesday.

Brandywine School District - Two-hour delay for all schools and offices Tuesday.

Caesar Rodney School District - Closed Tuesday. Students, teachers and specialists are told to enjoy their snow day, while some 12-month staff report by 10 a.m.

Cape Henlopen School District - After-school activities canceled Tuesday.

Capital School District - Closed Tuesday. All offices have a two-hour delay.

Christina School District - Two-hour delay. All pre-school programs canceled.

Colonial School District - Closed Tuesday. No morning half-day pre-K. All after-school activities and programs are canceled.

Lake Forest School District - Closed Tuesday for all students.

Laurel School District - Two-hour delay Tuesday, “out of an abundance of caution,” per the district announcement. No breakfast will be served and there will be no morning Pre-K.

Milford School District - Closed Tuesday. Originally a 90-minute delay was called for Milford, but Tuesday morning brought the complete closing for all students.

New Castle County Vocational Technical School District - Two-hour delay Tuesday.

Polytech School District- Closed Tuesday. All afternoon tutoring, athletic events, extracurricular activities and activity bus runs are canceled.

Red Clay School District - Two-hour delay Tuesday. No half-day pre-k.

Seaford School District - Two-hour delay Tuesday, hoping for temperatures to increase and ice to melt from the roadways. There will be no morning Pre-K today and no breakfast will be served.

Smyrna School District - Closed Tuesday with all after-school and evening activities canceled. All essential personnel and 12-month employees are to await further direction from their direct supervisors, and all 10-month employees will receive further direction via email.

Universities

The University of Delaware Newark’s campus and other UD locations in New Castle County, as well as its Lewes and Dover campuses, will open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the university announced.

University offices will open at 10 a.m. Classes scheduled before 10 a.m. may meet virtually or be canceled at the instructor’s discretion. Essential personnel should report to work as scheduled.

Delaware State University will have a 1 ½-hour delay on Tuesday to allow campus roads to be adequately salted and de-iced, the university announced.

Campus will open for regular operations and in-person classes at 10 a.m. Students scheduled to attend in-person classes before 10 a.m. should consult Blackboard for instructor information.

Delaware Technical Community College's Dover, Stanton and Wilmington campuses will open at noon Tuesday.

Goldey-Beacom College is completely closed on Tuesday, according to a university announcement.

Delaware courts

Delaware court facilities in New Castle County and Kent County will be open at 10 a.m. on Jan. 16.

Non-essential employees in these counties should not report to work until 10 a.m. Essential employees should report as scheduled.

Governments

Tuesday's session proceedings in both chambers are closed Tuesday, down in Legislative Hall.

Senate President Pro Tempore Dave Sokola and House Speaker Valerie Longhurst announced the cancelations by late morning, clearing committee meetings off the books. Work will return Wednesday.

State of Delaware offices in New Castle and Kent counties will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Non-essential employees who live or work in New Castle and Kent counties do not report until 10 a.m.  Essential employees are to report as scheduled.

New Castle County Council's Land Use Committee meeting has been postponed.

Newark is reporting its offices have been closed because of the inclement weather — this includes the closing of the Municipal Building and Parking Office for in-person drop-offs. Newark staff is unavailable by phone for non-emergencies.

Wilmington has delayed its trash collection. Trash and recyclables now will be collected on a modified schedule:

  • Wednesday: East of I-95 trash collection

  • Thursday: West of I-95 trash collection

  • Friday: East of I-95 recyclables collection

  • Saturday: West of I-95 recyclables collection
