Snow totals 3 to 6 inches, speed limits restored on highways, most schools virtual

A storm delivered up to half a foot of snow early Tuesday morning in south-central Pennsylvania, and it snarled traffic during the morning commute.

Three to 6 inches of snow has fallen in both York and Lebanon counties this morning, National Weather Service meteorologist John Bowen said. Cornwall in Lebanon County recorded 7.5 inches.

The snow fell heavily during the early morning commute, leading to reports of crashes and disabled vehicles.

A fatal crash involving a snowmobile has been reported in Newberry Township, said Ted Czech, public information officer for the York County Office of Emergency Management/York County 911. The coroner has been called to the scene.

A section of Interstate 83 in northern York County was shut down in both directions between the Lewisberry Road (Exit 39A) and Fishing Creek Road (Exit 36) interchanges earlier this morning. Commercial vehicles could not move out of the way to allow PennDOT trucks to treat the roads, said David Thompson, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

PennDOT's traffic cameras show that most of the highway is no longer snow covered, and traffic is moving.

The snow is expected to wind down starting around 10:30 a.m., Bowen said.

The National Weather Service has revised its forecast a few times over the past day as the storm shifted farther south than expected.

The highways include:

  • Interstate 83

  • Interstate 283

  • Route 15

PennDOT lifted the restrictions around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Delayed openings, closures

The County of York has decided to close its buildings, including the judicial center and district courts, for the day because of the ongoing effects from the storm and difficulty traveling, said Ted Czech, public information officer for the York County Office of Emergency Management/York County 911. The county initially had called for a delay.

Some school districts, such as Dover Area, South Eastern, Southern York and York City, have called for a virtual day. Other districts, such as West York and Red Lion, have a snow day.

West Manchester Township Police have closed its lobby for the day, a news release states.

Penn Waste has canceled trash pickup for today, according to the company's Facebook post. It will operate on a holiday schedule for the rest of the week.
