Snowfall delays, closures in Augusta, Staunton, and Waynesboro

The snow and ice have not let up in Augusta County, Staunton, or Waynesboro. After schools across the districts announced closures for Tuesday, most government offices followed with delayed openings.

The Augusta County Government Center, Shenandoah Valley Services, and Augusta Water offices will each open at noon.

Staunton City Hall and government offices opened at 10 a.m. on a two-hour delay schedule, according to the city’s social media. Trash collection scheduled for Tuesday was moved to Saturday “due to snow removal.” The recycling center closed on Tuesday and will not reopen until Thursday.

Staunton General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court are both closed for the day, while the Staunton Circuit Court opened at 10 a.m., according to the Staunton Sheriff's Office.

Waynesboro city offices opened at 10 a.m., with crews working on snow removal around 11 p.m. on Monday. Waynesboro’s social media shared a map tool, giving residents a look into where city crews have already removed snow.

The closures extended to libraries:

  • The Staunton Public Library opened at 10 a.m. due to road conditions. The delayed opening was announced on the library's Facebook page.

  • Augusta County Library's Facebook page announced several closings and delayed openings. Fisherville Main, Churchville Branch, Stuarts Draft, and Weyers Cave will open at noon, while Craigsville, Deerfield, and Middlebrook will be closed for the day.

  • The Waynesboro Public Library Facebook page also announced a delayed opening, now at 11 a.m., "due to inclement weather.

BRITE bus routes are canceled for the day. The bus services shut down at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Augusta County Public Schools announced that no practices, games or extracurricular activities will be permitted Tuesday.

The Virginia Department of Transportation cautioned against traveling in the early morning, saying that “up to four inches of snow” created minor conditions on I-64 and I-81. Around 8:30,

“Many Valley roads have been plowed and treated, leaving a wet surface, which will be subject to refreezing during the night,” reads a post on VDOT’s social media. “Snow showers are forecasted for tonight bringing additional accumulation to roads, especially untreated surfaces. The safest plan is not to travel during winter weather conditions.”

Crews began working at midnight Sunday evening, plowing and treating the road for 12-hour shifts through Tuesday. The first priority was placed on the Interstate Highway System and “limited-access roadways.” Second are “primary roads, and major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities or those with high-traffic volumes.” Third are secondary roads and subdivisions streets.
