Son accused of killing mother in Evansville booked in jail 4 months after homicide

EVANSVILLE — The man who stands accused of fatally shooting his mother in Evansville before fleeing to Illinois in July was booked into the Vanderburgh County jail Tuesday afternoon.

Jaron A. Wells, 28, is charged with one count of felony murder after police said he killed his mother, 45-year-old Shanay Michell Hunt, public court records state. A passerby located Hunt's remains inside a dilapidated, abandoned home in the 1000 block of Harriet Street on July 14.

Wells' return to Vanderburgh County on Tuesday came nearly four months after Evansville police, U.S. Marshals, and Illinois law enforcement arrested Wells in Carrier Mills, Illinois.

By car, it would take about an hour and a half to drive from Evansville to Carrier Mills, according to Google Maps. Local television station KBSI-Fox 23 reported in September that officers "contacted Wells on foot near the courthouse, where he was arrested."

Evansville Police Department Detective Caleb Wiseman, writing in Wells' arrest affidavit, described the abandoned home where officers recovered Hunt's remains as being in "a complete state of disarray."

Near where officers located Hunt's body, a crime scene detective found a .45-caliber Glock Auto Pistol shell casing.

Wiseman wrote that the ammunition type was "very particular and seldomly used." Weeks later, Wiseman said the investigation uncovered evidence that Hunt had sought out and acquired .45 caliber "GAP" ammo.

Witnesses and electronic evidence also linked Wells to his mother's killing, Wiseman asserted in a sworn affidavit.

Defendants who are charged with felony murder in Indiana are not afforded bond. As of Tuesday afternoon, Vanderburgh County court dockets didn't state when Wells would appear before a judge.
