3 QUESTIONS
...about Trump’s ballot eligibility case
My Yahoo News colleague David Knowles discusses what’s at stake as the Supreme Court hears arguments today over whether Donald Trump is able to stay on the ballot in Colorado.
Lily: What’s the argument for why Trump shouldn’t be eligible to run for president?
David: Colorado's Supreme Court ruled that Trump violated the 14th Amendment's Section 3, which bars from office those who swore an oath to “support” the Constitution and later “engaged in insurrection.”
Lily: And what’s Trump’s argument for why he should be eligible to run?
David: Trump claims Section 3 doesn’t apply to presidents and that Congress, not the states or courts, is the only body that can remove candidates from ballots.
Lily: How will the Supreme Court’s decision affect Trump’s ability to run?
David: The court will decide whether the “insurrection clause” allows states to remove him from state ballots.
