WASHINGTON − President Joe Biden may be on shaky ground in a key battleground state 10 months ahead of the general election.

Biden is trailing behind former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup in Michigan by 8 points, according to a recent statewide poll by The Detroit News and WDIV-TV.

In a potential faceoff between Trump and Biden, 47% of general election voters said they prefer Trump, while 39% said they would back Biden. Others reported they would vote for another candidate − 3% − and 11% remain undecided.

Trump led Biden by an even wider margin of 12 points when voters were given the option of a third-party candidate, according to the poll.

The Glengariff Group, which has conducted polling in Michigan related to Trump since 2016, held the Jan. 2-6 survey of 600 voters. The Detroit News reported that the poll's findings are the first time Trump led a Democratic nominee in Michigan prior to the election.

Biden defeated the former president in Michigan by 3 points in 2020. The Trump campaign contested the results in the state, filing a lawsuit that sought to delay the certification of results. In 2016, Trump was the first Republican presidential candidate to win the state in nearly three decades.

The majority of those surveyed in the The Detroit News and WDIV-TV poll, 77%, reported that they wanted to elect a new president while 17% said they feel Biden deserves a second term. For Trump, 33% reported they feel the Republican deserves a second term.

The Detroit News/WDIV-TV survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points.
