Tuesday storms: how to check AEP outage map in central Ohio during high wind, hailstorm

With severe weather, including hail and high winds, forecast Tuesday, power outages are a distinct possibility for the central Ohio region.

Severe storms with hail, high winds and possible tornados could pass through the Columbus area Tuesday, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

With rainstorm chances beginning around 1 p.m., the chance of precipitation will b 80% near midnight and into early Wednesday, with winds speeds expected to reach nearly 40 mph, The Dispatch previously reported. Storms are expected to continue until about noon Wednesday before clearing into the afternoon and evening.

American Electric Power (AEP) Ohio offers a live-updated outage map on their website.

The AEP website also contains an area where customers can report outages and downed power lines. Remain a safe distance from downed power lines if you see them.

Columbus Division of Power customers can also check an outage map on the city's website at.

If you see your area on the map, there is no need to report your outage and the Division of Power is actively working on it, according to the website. If you are experiencing an outage not shown on the map, please call us at (614) 645-7627 to report the outage.

Power outage tips

According to Ready.gov, here are a few tips during a power outage:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

  • Use a generator, but only outdoors and away from windows.

  • Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.

  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.

  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.

  • Charge devices beforehand
