Two pedestrians killed six hours apart in separate wrecks in Fayetteville

Two pedestrians were struck and killed in separate traffic incidents about six hours apart in Fayetteville, the Fayetteville Police Department said.

The first wreck happened about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday when a Dodge Ram, driven west on Southern Avenue by Iashawn Abrams of Strickland Bridge Road, struck a person standing in the center turn lane near Quality Road, police said. Abrams remained at the scene, police said.

The individual, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

The second wreck happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, police said, when Rex Smith, 59, of Fayetteville, was struck in the 3000 block of Bragg Boulevard near the Eutaw Shopping Center. Cumberland County EMS pronounced him dead at the scene, a release said.

Police did not provide information on whether the driver in the Bragg Boulevard wreck stopped.
