Whiting man, 54, struck by two cars and killed after falling off e-bike in Manchester

MANCHESTER−A 54-year-old Whiting man died Monday night on Route 530 after falling off the electric bike he was riding and getting hit by two cars that were traveling in the same direction, police said.

Police went to the county road near Whiting Memorial Park shortly before 7 p.m. They found Joseph Slover lying in the westbound lane of the roadway about a quarter mile east of Crestwood Parkway, police said.

Slover died of his injuries at the scene of the crash. The two vehicles, a gold 2004 Ford Taurus and a green 2008 Nissan Sentra, remained at the scene and had minimal damage, police said.

Investigators determined that Slover was riding an e-bike in the westbound lane of Route 530 when he fell off the bicycle onto the pavement.

The Taurus struck Slover while he was on the ground and the Sentra struck him shortly after, police said.

The driver of the Taurus, Dylan Coyle, 28, of the Whiting section of Manchester and the driver of the Sentra, Gary Paszek, 70, of Toms River were uninjured and driving alone.

While police are continuing the investigation, the primary contributing factors are believed to be bicyclist error and low light conditions, authorities said.

This crash is being investigated by Patrolmen Michael O’Hara and Brendan Brush of the department’s Traffic Safety unit.
