Funeral arrangements set for longtime Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik

Funeral arrangements have been set for longtime Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Clifton.

Visitation will be on Jan. 30 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist at 381 Grand St. in Paterson. Berdnik's funeral is scheduled for Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. at the cathedral. Interment will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in South Hackensack.

Mourners can also honor Berdnik by planting memorial trees in his memory through Shook Funeral Home in Clifton.

On Tuesday, Berdnik went into the bathroom at Toros restaurant on Hazel Street, and soon after, people in the restaurant heard a gunshot, multiple sources said.

The incident happened just after 3:30 p.m. By 3:38 p.m., a call went out over the Passaic County Sheriff's Office radio system for all units to respond to Toros.

People posted their condolences on the obituary website to go with the memories shared by local officials in the days since Berdnik's death.

Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. said he was in disbelief. "I am still processing this and waiting to learn more details," he said. "I am thinking and praying for his family and the Passaic sheriff’s department. I cannot believe this right now.”

Sen. Cory Booker called Berdnik “a longtime public servant with a distinguished career.”

“He leaves behind a legacy of sacrifice and service,” Booker said. “His passing is a terrible loss to the county and state he served for so many years.”
