Jose Antonio Ibarra, charged with the murder of Laken Riley, booked into Clarke Co. jail

Jose Antonio Ibarra, who is charged with the killing of nursing student Laken Riley, was booked into the Clarke County jail on Friday night, according to online jail records.

Ibarra, 26, of Athens is charged with malice and felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another. UGA police noted that he is not a U.S. citizen but did not know of his documentation status as of Friday evening.

Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student was killed Thursday, when she was jogging at the University of Georgia’s intramural fields. She was found dead at about 12:30 p.m. by UGA police in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick at the recreational grounds off College Station Road after friends called to report that she had not returned home.

On Friday, a heavy law enforcement presence was at the Cielo at Azulyk apartment complex, where UGA police chief Jeff Clark said Ibarra lived, on South Milledge Avenue and adjacent to the backside of the intramural fields. UGA police, Athens-Clarke County police, Georgia Bureau of Investigations officers and Georgia State Patrol were all seen in the area.

Diego Ibarra, 29 and from Venezuela, who is Jose Ibarras's brother according to the AJC, was also booked into the Clarke County jail and is being charged with possession of a fraudulent document.
