Live updates: Temperatures may rise slightly before bitter cold sets in Saturday

While the cold front moved in with what meteorologists said were dangerous wind chills, only flurries of snow were falling Friday morning across parts of Oklahoma.

Road conditions were clear throughout the day, and Oklahoma City was expected to get above freezing Friday afternoon. But there were some school closings and power outages in Oklahoma.

How much snow will OKC get this weekend?

After a brief warmup Friday afternoon, temperatures will plummet once again with Saturday's cold front of arctic air.

While wind chills were dangerously low on Friday morning, they will only get worse. Norman meteorologists warn that frostbite can occur quickly if not appropriately dressed, and damage to unprotected outdoor plumbing is possible.

Snow is in the forecast for Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning. Oklahoma City could see one to two inches, according to the National Weather Service in Norman.

OKC could reach high 30s by Friday afternoon

Norman meteorologists originally predicted OKC would reach 40 degrees on Friday thanks to sunshine and westerly winds, but now estimate a high of 37 degrees as west-northwest winds "add some chill to the air."

Either way, the temperature increase will be brief as an even stronger cold front moves in on Saturday.

How to stay warm in these frigid temperatures

Mark Fox, meteorologist at National Weather Center Norman, said the freezing temperatures could harm Oklahomans if they’re outdoors for too long.

NWS recommends wearing layers of loose-fitting, lightweight warm clothing and a hat. Wearing mittens that are snug at the wrist are better than gloves.

NWS also suggests covering your mouth to protect your lungs from the cold and to stay dry and out of the wind.

Just before 8 a.m. Friday morning, it was a chill 16 degrees in Oklahoma City, with a wind chill value of -2.

Oklahoma City schools move to virtual learning Friday

Oklahoma City Public Schools has moved to a virtual day due to low wind chills, the district announced Friday.

OKCPS buildings will be closed, except for administrative offices, the district announced.

What is the latest Oklahoma weather forecast?

Wind chills were in the single digits and negative single digits across much of central and western Oklahoma Friday morning.

"Sunshine and a lighter wind will help by afternoon," the meteorologists in Norman said on X.

And despite the previous forecast of up to one inch of snow, NWS said Friday there would be no accumulation.

The Oklahoma City Zoo is closing its gates Sunday and Monday, "due to the predicted winter storms and below-freezing temperatures."

OKC's MLK Day parade postponed due to weather

Oklahoma City's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, originally scheduled to take place on Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, has been postponed due to the expected weather.

The parade is set for 2 p.m. Jan. 27, according to a news release.

Oklahoma City Municipal Court canceled Tuesday

Judge Philippa C. James canceled all Oklahoma City Municipal Court sessions on Tuesday due to forecasted freezing temperatures.

Defendants will be notified of their new court date, and for those who request one, James is granting continuances without a fee for cases set on Wednesday.

Bitter cold expected to move in Thursday night

While the high temperature in Oklahoma Thursday was forecasted as 58 degrees, the meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Norman said that won't last long. A cold front is expected to move in Thursday night and bring it with the chance of light snowfall.

Oklahoma City could see up to one inch of snow, Norman meteorologists said, while other areas had potential for at least a trace of snow.
