Norwich native killed in January house fire that broke out on Binghamton's North Side

Investigators have determined a Binghamton man died of carbon monoxide poisoning during a mid-January fire that consumed a house on Pleasant Street in Binghamton.

Authorities identified the victim as 39-year-old Nathaniel James Jenkins, according to Capt. Cory Minor of the Binghamton Police Department.

Jenkins, who grew up in Norwich, is survived by two sons and was a sports standout in high school, according to his obituary.

The blaze erupted around 8:15 a.m. Jan. 15 in a residence at 2 Pleasant St., according to the Binghamton Fire Department. Firefighters who were battling the flames discovered Jenkins' body inside the house, Minor said.

The house was supposedly vacant and Jenkins and some others may have been staying there without permission, police believe.

The structure was heavily boarded up and there were hoarding conditions present, making it difficult to fight the blaze, fire officials said.

The exact cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but it's believed to be accidental in nature, Minor said, and there is nothing to indicate it was suspicious.
