El Paso police shooting wounds man during trespassing call on the West Side

A man was shot and wounded by an El Paso police officer during a trespassing incident early Tuesday morning at a duplex in a West Side neighborhood, a police spokeswoman said.

The shooting is under investigation in the 7200 block of Royal Arms Drive in a neighborhood off Resler Drive north of Belvidere Street.

Detective Judy Oviedo, a police spokeswoman, said the shooting occurred about 3 a.m. when patrol officers responded to a call of a trespassing in progress at a duplex on Royal Arms Drive.

One officer first arrived by himself and was soon joined by a second officer. Police found two men in their 20s who were in the property illegally and during the encounter police fired and one of the men was shot and wounded, Oviedo said.

The exact circumstances how the shooting occurred remain under investigation, Oviedo said.

The wounded man, who is about 24 years old, was taken to a hospital in undisclosed condition, Oviedo said. His name has not been released.

The shooting occurred as the El Paso-Las Cruces community prepares for the funeral on Wednesday for Las Cruces Police Officer Jonah Hernandez, who was stabbed and killed while responding to a trespassing call in Las Cruces.
