Passaic County offices will shut down on Wednesday for Sheriff Berdnik's funeral

After the suicide of Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik, the American flag was lowered to half staff and purple bunting hangs from the entrance of the Passaic County Sheriff Department building in Wayne, NJ on Wednesday Jan. 24, 2024.

Passaic County offices will be closed Wednesday for the funeral of County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

County Administrator Matthew Jordan issued an administrative order this week announcing the closure of most county offices and facilities on Jan. 31. The closure coincides with planned funeral proceedings at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson for Berdnik, who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Jan. 23

The closure extends to all county historic sites and the Preakness Valley Golf Course. It also effectively cancels all county-run public events previously scheduled for Wednesday. The Preakness Healthcare Center, however, will remain open. The county's nutrition, paratransit and senior care programs will also operate as usual, according to the order.
