Polk City man dies in single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning less than a mile from home

A 40-year-old Polk City man died Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle crash on a rural road west of Polk City.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that the crash happened shortly after 9 a.m. near 9950 Wilder Road. Steven Russell was driving a silver 2007 Volvo XC 90 SUV west on Wilder Road when the vehicle went off of the right shoulder, struck and broke a wood power pole and came to rest against a tree.

First responders from Polk County Fire Rescue found Russell with serious injuries and took him to a local hospital, where he was declared dead, the Sheriff's Office said.

The evidence showed there was no braking or corrective steering prior to the crash, the PCSO said. Russell was thought to be driving home. The crash occurred less than a mile away from his residence.

The investigation remains ongoing.
