Port of the Islands shooting: Front desk worker killed by former employee. What we know

In a case of workplace violence, a former employee of a Naples resort shot and killed one of the hotel's employees on New Year's Eve.

On the afternoon of Dec. 31, 2023, former resort employee James Gamble, 64, reportedly entered the Port of the Islands Resort and fatally shot 35-year-old Zachary Ludwig, who was working at the front desk.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene around 3:25 p.m. and found Ludwig's body in the hotel lobby.

They found Gamble dead in an office from a gunshot wound to the head authorities believe was self-inflicted.

Who was Zachary Ludwig?

Naples resident Zachary Ludwig was an employee at the Port of the Islands Resort.

Ludwig was working at the front desk on New Year's Eve when former resort employee James Gamble shot and killed him.

911 calls reveal witnesses took cover, hid as shooting happened

In three 911 calls released by the sheriff's office, callers reporting the murder described running for cover, with one hiding in her hotel room as the shooting took place.

One caller said he heard five or six shots from the bar near the resort's lobby while another recalled hearing yelling and seeing Ludwig on the floor while Gamble ran.

The 52-room Port of the Islands Resort is at 25000 Tamiami Trail East in Naples, adjacent to Everglades National Park.
