Racine man charged in Christmas Eve homicide in downtown Appleton set for hearing Thursday

APPLETON – A 20-year-old Racine man charged with killing a man in downtown Appleton on Christmas Eve is scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing.

Elliot Campbell is charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Elijah Dodson, of Milwaukee.

The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday in Outagamie County Circuit Court.

Just after 2 a.m. Dec. 24 in the 100 block of South Walnut Street, police responded to a report of gunshots. They found Dodson injured, and first responders took him to a hospital, where he died of his injuries, according to the Appleton Police Department.

On Jan. 2, Appleton Police Chief Polly Olson released a letter saying the department had not yet found the suspect for the shooting but would be "actively increasing patrols in the downtown area to provide an extra layer of security and reassurance for our community members."

The department announced Campbell was arrested Jan. 13 in Racine.

Outagamie County Circuit Court Judge Mitchell Metropolous granted a motion to seal a criminal complaint Jan. 17, the day after it was filed.

If convicted, Campbell faces a mandatory life sentence.
