JACKSON TWP. − Marc Albert says anyone can cook a hot dog. That's why he shuttered Major League Dawgs in the spring and replaced it with The Blazing Pig.

Located at 6817 Wales Ave. NW alongside Albert’s Hartville Hometown Meats and Seafood and DP Jackson Steakhouse, the locale offers an opportunity for the home cook or the chance to relax in comfort while someone else preps your meal.

Sandwiches include everything from pulled pork ($7.95) to brisket ($9.95). All the meats are slow-cooked for 19 hours, with a focus on seasoning and cooking to just the right temperature. The approach helps lock in moisture that’s apparent when you enjoy the barbecued meats without any additional sauces.

Diners also can choose two- and three-meat platters that have become popular. Sides are extra, and include the signature Buffalo Trace bourbon bacon baked beans, extra white cheddar mac & cheese, cilantro lime fire roasted corn, grandma’s cole slaw or a jalapeno cole slaw. A six-ounce side is $2.95; the 12-ouncers are $4.95. Fresh cut fair french fries are also an option at $2.95.

No barbecue is complete without flavorful sauces, and The Blazing Pig gives you 10 choices ranging from sweet honey to Nashville hot to the most popular, Dr. Pepper jalapeno − which I highly recommend.

One of the unique offerings at The Blazing Pig are its fusion bowls, which come in regular or large, with prices varying depending on your meat selection. In addition to the meats described above, choose pulled chicken ($9.95 regular) or pork belly ($10.95 regular).

I tried two different bowls. The pulled pork bowl, with extra white cheddar mac & cheese, Memphis sauce and some of the jalapeno cole slaw on the side; and a large bowl with a one-pound baked potato base, brisket, extra white cheddar mac & cheese, topped with pickled red onions and the Dr. Pepper jalapeno sauce. The food was fresh, the meats were tender and well-seasoned, and the portions were generous and filling.

While I was dining, Jake Canfield, a construction supervisor who was working in Perry Township, arrived and ordered a pulled pork sandwich with Nashville hot sauce and the signature baked beans for his side. He said he has been a frequent customer since Blazing Pig opened. “The portions are filling, the place is always clean, and you can’t beat the flavors,” he said.

During the week you can choose from specially priced samplers, allowing a chance to try a variety of menu items. Domestic, imported and craft beers are also available, as are fountain drinks. And, for those who miss Major League Dawgs, pop into The Blazing Pig and order up a single ($2.95) or four pack ($9.95) of that quarter-pound Coney dog.
