Woman, 70, killed in two-vehicle crash in rural northeast Marion County

A two-vehicle crash in rural Marion County claimed the life of one person and injured another Friday morning. Here's what we know:

What happened? Troopers said a woman behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla was driving east on County Road 314.

A man driving a Mitsubishi Outlander was heading west on the same roadway.

FHP officials said the Toyota crossed the double yellow line, veered into the westbound lane and struck the SUV head-on.

Did anyone witness the crash? Yes. A motorists told troopers that the Toyota driver was driving erratically before the crash occurred.

Who was killed/injured in the crash? The woman in the Toyota was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was age 70 and from Salt Springs. The man in the Outlander was transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital for treatment of serious injures. He is 25 years old and from St. Augustine.

What time did this happened? FHP was dispatched at 9:59 a.m. and arrived on scene at 10:28 a.m.

Where did the crash happened? In the 21700 block of CR 314 in Scrambletown.

Did the crash block traffic? Yes. Deputies blocked traffic on CR 314 so troopers could investigate the crash.

Other fatalities: To date, four people have died in traffic crashes in Marion County since the beginning of the month. Three of the four deaths occurred Thursday, when a woman stole a sheriff's deputy's SUV, drove recklessly and slammed into a pickup truck. The woman died, as did two people in the pickup truck.

Last month, FHP officials said, seven people lost their lives in traffic crashes. Last year, 92 people died in wrecks in the county investigated by FHP. The numbers do not include figures from the cities of Dunnellon, Ocala or Belleview.
