What are the coldest cities in the U.S.? Another wave of freezing temperatures in store

While Wednesday brought respite from the cold in some areas of the country, wind chill and weather advisories have been issued Thursday across the Midwest and Northeast ahead of a new winter storm that is expected to bring more snowfall and freezing temperatures.

Over the next two days, at least 3 inches of snow is expected to fall in states stretching across Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin to New York, New Jersey and New England, according to AccuWeather. Snow fell overnight across the Midwest, dumping several inches in Chicago and Detroit.

As the storm moves east Thursday evening and Friday, some parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and New Jersey could see between 3 to 6 inches of snow, AccuWeather said.

Meanwhile, the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast can expect a brief break from the cold Thursday as temperatures return to the 60s and 70s, the National Weather Service said. The pause will be short-lived as another frigid arctic airmass spreads across the eastern half of the U.S. ahead of the weekend.

The Pacific Northwest will continue to be battered by a swath of freezing rain and heavy mountain snowfall through the end of the week, according to the weather service. The heaviest snowfall is expected over the Cascades and Lower Columbia Basin, where upwards of a quarter to half inch of ice is possible through Saturday morning. Rain along the coastline of Oregon and Washington could lead to flash flooding as the ground is "very saturated," the weather service warned.

Weather developments

Severe weather led to school shutdowns and chaotic travel conditions, with almost 1,500 flights delayed or canceled across the U.S. Thursday morning, according to Flight Aware.

At least 14 deaths were linked to the weather over the last few days. Five people in Oregon died of hypothermia and two were killed by falling trees. A snowmobiler was hit by a truck in Utah, a skier was killed by an avalanche in Wyoming, and three people died of suspected hypothermia in Wisconsin. In New Jersey's slippery Garden State Parkway, two people died Tuesday when their SUV collided with a snowplow. On Tuesday, the Tennessee Department of Health confirmed six weather-related fatalities.

Some areas in the country also experienced power outages with over 80,000 households without power across the U.S. early Thursday morning, according to a database maintained by USA TODAY. Most outages – some 40,000 – were reported in Oregon.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel and the weather is expected to thaw next week. About 90% of the nation should see normal to above-normal temperatures by the middle of next week.
