Councilman Mark McBrayer running for Lubbock mayor

Lubbock City Councilman Mark McBrayer on Wednesday announced he's running for mayor in the city's upcoming May municipal election. McBrayer, the first-term councilman who represents the city's District 3, announced his intention in a news release Wednesday morning.

“I deeply care about Lubbock and the people who call it home,” McBrayer said in the release. “That is why I have decided to run for mayor. Serving on the city council has taught me that a good leader must have a listening ear and that trust is earned by hearing first and then standing up for what is most important to citizens and taxpayers.”

McBrayer was first elected to the city council in 2022 in an uncontested race and has served about half of his four-year term. He is a local attorney and entrepreneur and said he plans to retire from law to focus on serving as mayor.

“What is most important to citizens is keeping them safe and delivering basic, core city services, McBrayer said. “This means supporting our police and firemen, maintaining our streets and critical infrastructure, and enforcing city zoning laws and codes.”

McBrayer is the third person to enter the mayoral race. He will face longtime District 4 Councilman Steve Massengale and community activist Adam Hernandez in the May 4 election. Incumbent Mayor Tray Payne announced in December he would not seek re-election.
