The countdown to the 2024 presidential election is underway, as Americans inch closer to picking the official Republican and Democratic nominees.

President Joe Biden has already thrown his hat in the ring for reelection, while others, including Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., hope to take the Democratic spot. The Republican Party is still deciding who will head up its ticket.

On Jan. 15, former President Donald Trump won the Iowa Caucuses. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came in second with 21.2% of the votes and Nikki Haley came in at a close third, with 19.1% of the votes.

Now, another political event is underway: the New Hampshire primary. With the date swiftly approaching, here's what to know about the state's election day.

When is the New Hampshire primary?

The New Hampshire presidential primary will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The state's primary comes just eight days after the in-person portion of the Iowa Caucuses and weeks before Democratic and Republican showdowns in South Carolina — former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley's homes state — where she also served as governor.

During the New Hampshire primary, voters in the Granite State will cast their ballots for who they want as their party's nominee.

Whoever wins each party's nomination will then receive state delegates, ultimately aiming to win the national nomination. In the case of New Hampshire, the Republican side gets 22 delegates and the Democratic side gets 33 delegates.

Who is on the ballot in New Hampshire?

Top contenders on the Republican ballot are Trump and Haley. DeSantis dropped out of the race, ending his campaign on Sunday.

Although he is seeking reelection, Biden's name will not be on the New Hampshire primary ballot because of disputes over primary election dates. The Democratic Party's first contest for the 2024 nomination will be held in South Carolina.
