Yahoo!, communities across U.S. to honor 9/11 anniversary

On Sept. 11, 2011, business as usual at Yahoo! will pause for a Digital Moment of Silence to honor those killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. At 8:46 a.m. ET, the moment the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, normal service on the site will cease for one minute. During that time, Yahoo! will encourage visitors to reflect on the victims of the attack and to share their own stories about how 9/11 affected them. Visitors will also have the opportunity to donate to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Communities across the country will also be honoring those who were lost in the tragedy. Below is a list of how some areas plan to remember the fallen. If your city, town, neighborhood, or civic group is planning to hold a ceremony or a moment of silence to honor the day, share it with us.

New York City: The 9/11 Memorial will officially open on Sept. 11 with a ceremony for victims' families at Ground Zero. The Memorial will then open to the public on the next day for visitors who reserved passes in advance. On Sept. 10, Community Board 1 will hold Hands Across Lower Manhattan, an event on the West Side Waterfront.

Washington, D.C.: Those who died in the attack at the Pentagon will be honored at a ceremony of 700 people, including family members of the deceased and members of the military. It will take place at the Pentagon Memorial, which opened in 2008.

Shanksville, Pa.: A commemorative service to honor those who died on Flight 93 will take place at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sept. 11 at the Memorial Plaza. Musical tributes, wreath layings, and additional activities will continue throughout the afternoon.

Here are other memorial events and services planned on 9/11 across the U.S.:

I was at a friend's house caring for her 1 yr old son and my 8 month old grandson. I was surfing the tv channels on he cable to find a kids station for them to watch. I came across cnn news where they were showing live coverage of the first plane crash into the first tower. Then suddenly the second tower was hit by a plane. I thought, " what is going on. On by accident but 2?" then the towers started to crumble! All could do was sit and cry, "dear lord what is happening?"
then i remembered my oldest son who was a long haul truck driver and his rout took him to ny. I called his cell phone and i was relieved to hear his voice say, "mom, i'm not there. They sent me to ohio today." i was so thankful. Then he told me about the pentagon and flight 93. I asked him if we were at war? He said it looks like it.
i told him we lived near a nuclear station. He told me to stay near the tv and watch for any warning to go to a safe place.
soon my friend came home and we sat together, praying and watching the news.
when i hear a loud low flying airplane, it still sends fear in me. I watch it until it leaves my area. Till i can't see it any more.
And yes, i praised god when they killed husein! The human in me was glad. The born again christian was not.
And when they got ben loud-in again i was glad!
My grandson is now 10 years old and is learning about the attacks in school.. I taped every day for all the news reports on the war that this created until husein was killed. Obsessed? Yes i was. I had to force myself to move on and give my fears to the lord.
i am a hands on grandma to 3 wonderful grandsons and they help keep me going forward.
do i like the 2 wars that this all spurred? No. Do i think they were
necessary? Yes. I thank god everyday that i was born and raised and live in the usa. Do i like what has happened to her sense then? No.
Do i like what the government is doing now? No. But i am glad that i have the freedom of choice. To voice my feelings without fear. And the right to worship my lord jesus christ freely.

I dont think we will ever get over this...I remember hearing about the plane that hit and I thought what the hell is happening..I knew the president was in florida, I had heard he was visiting some of the schools, that scared the shit out of me, so i B lined it to my sons elementary school. When I explained to them why i was pulling My son out for the day they looked at me like I was crazy. Well I got home and I I left for some reason I cant even remember why, but I passed the school and it was packed . Now who's crazy?

The media all ban together and refuse to show the planes hitting the towers because "it's too upsetting", high school kids don't understand what the big deal is, and foreign terrorists are given the same rights as the US citizens they murdered - OK EVERYONE REMEMBER 9/11 now that you have all forgotten it.

We were told Todd Morgan Beamer perished at 10:10 a.m. on September 11, 2001 aboard United flight 93 in a Pennsylvania field. However, he is not listed in the Social Security Death Index. Funeral services were provided by Mather-Hodge Funeral Home & Star of David. I wonder why Somerset County Coroner Wallace E. Miller, the funeral home, or a family member did not report his death and number (342-72-0398) to the Social Security Administration?

To those who believe that either the US Government, the Israeli government, and/or Klingons were responsible for the attacks, if you really want to help the families and loved ones of those who died find some peace, then please lay off this week. Thanks!

We need to confront our lawmakers on 9/11 ,i dont want to live with pathological liars any longer ... if we do nothing then we deserve the misery of a broken, bankrupt nation.

Remember or don't. No need to bicker or argue or complain. If you want to remember those who died, do. I certainly will, the same as I remember the fallen from other trageties. It has nothing to do with religion. Just compassion. I respect those who don't want to remember and defend their right to forget if they choose. I respect those who do remember.

The important thing is that each must deal with the day in their own way. Or not. And that is what freedom is all about and that is what we are really celebrating anyway. "They" want to take it away and we aren't going to let them. Let there be peace.

Couple of things here. First, I'm about as religious as a doorknob, but, I fail to see why this whole thing of saying a prayer at the 9/11 ceremonies has been squashed. I've grown up in this country with prayers being said for openings of nearly everthing, seems like even supermarked openings (just kidding). It's always, or nearly always been part of America. If a minister wants to get up and say something religious for a few minutes, well, hey, it's ok with me. I generally think of something else and it doesn't bother me. As far as I'm concerned, the prayers at the 9/11 ceremonies are for those who died, but also for the surviving families and friend. If it gives them some comfort, then why not include it.....not like it's going to hurt anyone. If I find something "offensive" for a few minutes, well, I just shut up because I know the speech won't last that long. To me, that's what tolerance is about. Being "offended" is only a frame of mind anyway. This is America and Americans have always been polite, but have always spoken their mind too. So, I guess I'm wondering who dreamed this idiotic idea up. Since when is the government chaging what amounts to the traditions in this country? Second, when did this country and the people in it start kissing the #$%$ of every person who crossed our borders? This is nuts. No one worried if the Scottish, Irish, German, Chinese or any other nationality that came here were "offended" by this country. Frankly, I'm really tired of the whole "pllitically correct" garbage. If you come to this country and feel you are "offended" then leave and go somewhere else. Americans are known for their independent spirit and if you can't take the heat, then get out of the kitchen....
